Ice-T is sparking debate over a word almost everyone uses.

The rapper and actor recently spoke about the slang term “OG,” and he believes his career played a major role in bringing it into mainstream culture. While the phrase is now common across social media, sports, and everyday conversation, Ice-T remembers when it carried a very specific meaning.

Originally, “OG” stood for “Original Gangster,” a term rooted in street culture that described someone respected and experienced. During the early years of hip-hop, Ice-T frequently used the phrase in his music and public image, helping introduce it to a wider audience.

As his popularity grew, so did the reach of the word. Over time the meaning changed. Instead of only referring to street credibility, “OG” evolved into a broader compliment for someone seen as a pioneer or veteran in any field.

Ice-T explained that as people increasingly associated the term with him, he leaned into it and essentially adopted it as part of his public persona. For longtime fans, the connection felt natural. For others online, it raised questions about whether any individual can really claim ownership over slang.

The comments quickly turned into a discussion about hip-hop’s influence on language. Many supporters said he helped bring the term to mainstream audiences, while critics argued that phrases like “OG” belong to the culture as a whole, not one person.

Regardless of which side people land on, the reaction shows how deeply music shapes everyday vocabulary. Words that start in specific communities can eventually become part of global speech without most users knowing their origins.

According to People, Ice-T said he helped popularize the term “OG” and later embraced it as part of his identity as it entered pop culture.
