After nearly six decades in the music world, legendary saxophonist Kenny G is still playing with passion and pride. At age 69, he recently reflected on his long career and revealed what he enjoys most about making music more than 60 years after he first picked up his instrument.

Kenny G, born Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, has become one of the most successful instrumentalists in music history. He first released his solo debut in 1982 and went on to become known around the world for his smooth saxophone sound and hits like “Forever in Love.” Over the years he has worked with major artists and built a catalog of music that has connected with listeners from different generations.

At a recent Pre-Grammy Gala hosted by music icon Clive Davis, Kenny G shared a bit of humor about his decades-long career. He joked that his favorite part of making music today is “just knowing that you’re really great at what you do.” He pointed out that after playing saxophone for almost 60 years, he figures he ought to be good at it.

That confidence comes from a lifetime of practice, performance and evolution. Over his career he has toured with stars like Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton and has continued to release albums and explore new collaborations. While not everyone agrees on what genre his music fits into, there is no question that he has built a lasting place in popular music.

Kenny G also spoke warmly about his relationship with Clive Davis, saying that Davis encouraged him to pursue a solo recording career early on. He admitted that big industry events are not his favorite scene, but that seeing Davis and celebrating music with peers makes it worth being there.

His comments show a blend of humility and self-assurance that has followed him throughout his life in music. After six decades, he seems just as committed to his art as ever. According to People, Kenny G’s favorite part of making music today is the simple satisfaction of being really good at it.
