A staffer in President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly been forced to resign after a confrontation at an NBA game in Washington, D.C., was caught on camera.

Britt McHenry, a former ESPN personality and Fox News contributor who recently joined the State Department, found herself at the center of controversy after video surfaced showing her throwing a drink at a basketball fan during a Washington Wizards game.

The incident quickly attracted attention, and reports indicate that McHenry lost her government position shortly afterward.

What Happened at the NBA Game?

The confrontation occurred on Wednesday, October 21, during a game between the Washington Wizards and Milwaukee Bucks at Capital One Arena.

McHenry, 40, was attending the game with a male companion when she became involved in an argument with a group of spectators sitting nearby.

The disagreement reportedly began after several men made insulting comments about Milwaukee Bucks player Kyle Kuzma and his fiancée, model Winnie Harlow.

According to an account from a source cited in the reporting, the spectators were making derogatory remarks about Harlow’s appearance and blaming Kuzma’s basketball performance on his relationship.

McHenry reportedly took offense to the comments, leading to an increasingly tense exchange.

Video Shows McHenry Throwing Her Drink

Footage of the incident shows McHenry standing up and throwing the remaining contents of her drink toward a man seated nearby.

The confrontation did not immediately end there.

As McHenry and her companion walked away from their seats, spectators could be heard reacting to the incident.

McHenry continued exchanging remarks with the group while making her way up the arena stairs.

At one point, she turned toward the crowd and blew kisses before leaving the area.

The video soon became a major part of the controversy, bringing attention to McHenry’s recently acquired position within the Trump administration.

Government Career Comes to an Abrupt End

McHenry had joined the State Department as a press adviser in September 2026, just weeks before the incident.

She had publicly celebrated the appointment on LinkedIn, describing the opportunity as an exciting new chapter after spending approximately 17 years working in television news.

McHenry also expressed admiration for Secretary of State Marco Rubio and enthusiasm about contributing to the administration.

However, her time in the position appears to have ended abruptly.

Reports indicate that McHenry was asked to resign following the incident at the basketball game.

One source claimed she had received a promotion just one day before being told to leave her position.

The timing has drawn additional attention to the circumstances surrounding her departure.

State Department Responds to Reports

According to PEOPLE, McHenry’s departure was reported after footage of the confrontation circulated publicly.

A source cited by Page Six claimed that McHenry had been forced to resign because of the incident.

Front Office Sports separately reported that McHenry was no longer employed in her State Department role and that she had confirmed signing a resignation letter.

When asked about the situation, a State Department spokesperson declined to discuss the circumstances, explaining that the department does not comment on internal personnel matters.

Neither McHenry nor the State Department immediately responded to PEOPLE’s requests for additional comment on Friday, October 23.

From Television Personality to Government Adviser

Before entering government service, McHenry spent years building a career in sports broadcasting and political commentary.

She previously worked for ESPN and later became a contributor at Fox News.

Her transition into the State Department marked a significant professional change, moving from television appearances into a communications position within the federal government.

When announcing her appointment in September, McHenry expressed excitement about using her media experience to serve the country.

Now, less than two months later, her government career has been interrupted by an incident that occurred outside the workplace.

A Confrontation With Lasting Consequences

The incident has raised questions about public conduct and the expectations placed on individuals serving in government positions.

While the confrontation reportedly began with offensive remarks directed at a basketball player’s fiancée, the video showing McHenry throwing her drink became the central focus of the controversy.

McHenry’s resignation has been reported by multiple outlets, although the State Department has not publicly confirmed the specific reason for her departure.

For McHenry, an evening at an NBA game has resulted in an unexpected and highly publicized professional setback.

Whether she will address the incident further or return to television remains unclear.
