The Grey’s Anatomy universe is officially expanding again and this time, the franchise is heading to Texas.

ABC is developing a brand-new spinoff connected to the long-running medical drama, and longtime fans are already reacting to what could be one of the biggest changes the franchise has made in years. After more than two decades centered around Seattle and Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the new series is expected to introduce an entirely different setting while still staying connected to the world viewers have followed since 2005.

What’s getting even more attention is the involvement of Ellen Pompeo.

Even though Pompeo stepped back from being the full-time lead of Grey’s Anatomy in recent years, she is reportedly attached to the new project as an executive producer alongside Shonda Rhimes. That detail alone has fans wondering how closely connected the new show could end up being to the original series and whether familiar faces could eventually appear.

The project is still in early development, but reports say the story would revolve around a hospital in Texas. The shift away from Seattle has already sparked mixed reactions online, with some viewers excited to see the franchise try something fresh while others feel Grey’s Anatomy has already expanded enough over the years.

There’s also curiosity around how different the tone of the series could be compared to the original. Grey’s Anatomy became known for balancing emotional storylines, complicated relationships, and high-stakes medical cases, but fans are already speculating whether a Texas-based spinoff could lean into a completely different atmosphere and cast dynamic.

The franchise has successfully expanded before with shows like Private Practice and Station 19, although both series had very different receptions from fans. That’s part of why reactions to this latest announcement are so divided already. Some viewers are excited by the idea of a new setting and new characters, while others are worried ABC could be pushing the Grey’s Anatomy brand too far after such a long run.

The report says the series is currently in development at ABC with Ellen Pompeo and Shonda Rhimes both attached as executive producers, according to People.

For now, fans are left wondering whether this could become the next major hit in the Grey’s Anatomy universe or if audiences are finally ready to move on from the franchise’s expansion era.
