More than three decades after The Silence of the Lambs became a cultural phenomenon, one of its most recognizable stars is looking back with a different perspective.
Ted Levine, who portrayed the chilling serial killer Buffalo Bill in the 1991 thriller, recently reflected on the film’s legacy and the long-running debate surrounding its portrayal of gender identity. At the time of its release, the movie was widely praised, going on to win five Academy Awards including Best Picture. But it also faced criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates who argued that Buffalo Bill’s character reinforced harmful stereotypes about transgender people.
Now, Levine appears to agree that the backlash may have been aimed at the wrong place.
In a new interview, he suggested that the controversy surrounding the character might have overshadowed deeper issues within the story itself. Rather than focusing solely on Buffalo Bill as the villain, Levine implied that the broader system and social conditions depicted in the film deserved more scrutiny.
When The Silence of the Lambs was released in 1991, conversations around gender identity were far less mainstream than they are today. The film does include dialogue clarifying that Buffalo Bill is not canonically transgender, yet many viewers and advocacy groups felt the distinction was lost in the cultural impact of the character.
Over the years, critics have revisited the film through a modern lens, questioning whether its narrative unintentionally contributed to stigma. Levine’s recent comments add a new layer to that discussion, especially coming from the actor who brought the character to life.
According to People, Levine said that in hindsight, the film may have “vilified” trans people in ways that were not fully understood at the time. His remarks acknowledge how cultural awareness has shifted since the early 1990s, when representation and nuance in Hollywood storytelling were handled very differently.
The conversation around legacy films has become increasingly common in recent years, as audiences reevaluate older projects through current social standards. For some, The Silence of the Lambs remains a landmark thriller. For others, it represents a complicated chapter in how marginalized communities were portrayed in mainstream media.
Levine’s reflection does not erase the film’s place in cinematic history. But it does highlight how even celebrated classics can carry unintended consequences that become clearer with time.
